Swimming: 4A-3A State Meet

Severna Park’s girls won seven events, including two each from Emily and Sarah Lloyd, to swim to a second 4A/3A state championship in three seasons is Saturday’s state meet at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex.

Broadneck went back-to-back on the boys side, winning six events to cruise to the title over runner-up Severna Park.

Sarah Lloyd set new meet records in both the 200 individual medley and 100 butterly, while sister Emily Lloyd did the same in the 100 and 500 freestyle events. Melissa Cropper added a championship in the 100 backstroke and the Falcons also came out on top in the 200 medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay.

Other girls champions included Urbana’s JoAnna Yeh in the 200 freestyle, South River’s Mary Kay Harris in the 50 freestyle and Leonardtown’s Brittany Culpepper, who won the 100 breaststroke in a new meet record time. Urbana closed the meet with a win in the 400 freestyle relay.

Doug McWhorter was a double winner for Broadneck’s boys, taking the 50 and 100 freestyle events, the latter in a meet record time. James Robicharud nabbed the top spot in the 200 individual medley and Taylor Smith in the 100 breaststroke for the Bruins. Broadneck also won the 200 medley relay and 400 free relay.

South River’s Justin Vagts claimed two championships, winning both the 200 and 500 freestyle events. Urbana’s Adam Shandrenko won the 100 butterfly. Huntingtown won the 200 free relay, while Hurricanes’ senior Thomas Morgan also earned the top spot in the 100 backstroke.
